The Legacy of Milos Forman

In 1978, esteemed director Milos Forman ​and his​ ​Screenwriting​ mentor​ Frank Daniel​ ​were appointed co-chairs of the Film Program. Under their leadership, the program flourished and became the world-renowned institution of film education that it is today. In many ways, Forman was the "creative founder" of Columbia Film, having shaped and refined its ​commitment to narrative​ filmmaking anchored in strong screenplays. He ​gave it​ a character as distinct as his own​—original, passionate​, ​intelligent​, and international.

Although their Commencements were virtual, these graduates are delighted to join the celebration this year with the Class of 2022, and they have a lot of good advice to offer about the future both on and off campus. 

Creative Producing alumna Sarah-Kate Fenelon ‘18 is a producer on season two of the acclaimed Amazon series, Good Omens.

To ease the transition from film school into the industry, Columbia University School of the Arts' Dean’s Council launched an initiative that connects those striving to make a name for themselves with those who have. Veteran alumni provide recent alumni ongoing guidance, contacts, and support while also strengthening the Columbia network around the world. In this series, we feature those pairs. Alumna Sian Edwards-Beal '00 recently screened her latest feature film, HERE. IS. BETTER. at the ReelAbilities NY Film Festival in April.

Film Chair and Associate Professor of Professional Practice Jack Lechner wrote a chapter of the anthology Fifty Key Stage Musicals, a book edited By Robert W. Schneider and Shannon Agnew. Lechner’s chapter is titled ‘Falsettos’ and is about the 1992 musical of the same name. The book was recently published by Routledge and can be purchased here

Alumnus Adewale Olukayode '21 is among the four emerging filmmakers selected to participate in the Woodstock Film Festival's Filmmakers Residency/Incubator program.

Associate Professor Ramin Bahrani (CC ’96) is the director and executive producer of Hulu’s upcoming and widely-anticipated new series, Immigrant. The show, which will dive into the surreal origin story of the famous stripper troupe, Chippendales, comes from Robert Siegel, the acclaimed creator of Pam & Tommy.

Columbia University School of the Arts celebrated the winners of the ninth annual Blue List screenwriting competition on March 16, 2022, in an online mixer that demonstrated the capacity of Columbia’s network to foster new screenwriting talent.

Two Columbia Film alumni have been selected to participate in the 51st iteration of the New Directors/New Films (ND/NF) festival from Film at Lincoln Center and The Museum of Modern Art. They are: Ricky D’Ambrose ’12 and Jasmin Freitas Tenucci ’20.

Several Columbia University alumni have teamed up to create a new original series of digital shorts, entitled Marta Nesspek Presents. They are: Logan Reed ’21 (director), Kate Pressman ’20 (writer, illustrator, and hands performer), Elizagrace Madrone ’20 (producer and dramaturg), and Josh Brown ’20 (soundtrack composer). 

The 94th annual Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 27, 2022. Seven films from Columbia filmmakers have received nominations.
