The Legacy of Milos Forman

In 1978, esteemed director Milos Forman ​and his​ ​Screenwriting​ mentor​ Frank Daniel​ ​were appointed co-chairs of the Film Program. Under their leadership, the program flourished and became the world-renowned institution of film education that it is today. In many ways, Forman was the "creative founder" of Columbia Film, having shaped and refined its ​commitment to narrative​ filmmaking anchored in strong screenplays. He ​gave it​ a character as distinct as his own​—original, passionate​, ​intelligent​, and international.

Professor Ira Deutchman is a founding filmmaker of Missing Movies, a new non-profit organization dedicated to empowering filmmakers, distributors, archivists, and others to locate lost materials, clear rights, and advocate for policies and laws to make the full range of our cinema history available to all.

Professor of Professional Practice Jamal Joseph is set to produce an upcoming biopic of Afeni Shakur, a prominent member of the Black Panther party, and late mother of legendary rapper Tupac.

Alumna Chloe Sarbib ’20 has been awarded the Jury Award for her short film, Jensen, in the Women’s Category at the 2022 DGA Student Film Awards. The film was co-written by Chloe & Gina Hackett '20 and produced by Waleed Alqahtani '20.

Alumna Silka Luisa ‘11 is the showrunner for the forthcoming Apple TV+ original series, Shining Girls. In addition to helming the series as showrunner, Luisa also serves as executive producer and writer.

On A Global Scale is a bi-weekly series about international co-productions by Columbia filmmakers.

The Columbia University School of the Arts graduate Film Program proudly announces the winners of the 2022 Columbia Blue List screenwriting competition, presented by MUBI.

Behind the D4 is an interview series about the D4 films made by Film MFA Program students. After completing their Directing IV coursework, each student is required to direct a short final project, called the “D4 Film.” 

Alumna Darya Zhuk '15 will direct several episodes of ZATO, a forthcoming series from Netflix.

Alumna Lisa Cholodenko ’97 directed two episodes of Hulu’s forthcoming series, The Girl From Plainville.

Out of the Past, Into the Future is a bi-weekly series that aims to chronicle a limitless scope of work by Columbia filmmakers representative of the past, present, and future.

Associate Professor David Henry Hwang’s new opera, The Rift, will premiere as a part of the Washington National Opera’s Written in Stone program for the Kennedy Center’s 50th anniversary celebration.

Third year Creative Producing student Stephanie Choriatis is the creator of Lights, Camera, TEACH, a new film education podcast. 

The Blue List

Columbia University Blue List Script Competition connects the Film Program’s most talented recent graduates with leading professionals in the world of film and television. The Blue List represents the most esteemed, un-produced screenplays and television pilots written by Film & Playwriting graduates of the Columbia University’s School of the Arts.
