Behind The Scenes: R Christopher Maxwell, Stage Manager

R Christopher Maxwell '19 is a 2nd-year Stage Manager and the President of the Interdisciplinary Arts Council, a student group that promotes interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration among individual programs and their students. We sat down with Maxwell to talk about his work in Theatre and at Columbia. 


Why did you decide to become a Stage Manager?

I love the magic of theatre-making and in management, you get to experience every aspect of that creation 1st hand.  


Why does a theatre production need a Stage Manager?

The director guides the show until opening night and the stage manager keeps the vision alive until closing night. This marriage is essential to all productions.

What would you like to be doing in 10 years?

Stage Managing Internationally


Who’s your mentor and why?

Professors notwithstanding, my peers are currently my biggest mentors. They all bring so much insight to the table it's rather astonishing how much I learn by just being in the room.
