Made by God, a new play by Playwriting alumna and New York-based Irish writer Ciara Ní Chuirc ‘21, will have its world premiere at Irish Rep.

Playwriting alum Sam Chanse ’12 is featured as one of five writers in The Public Theater’s new production, Out of Time. In this production, The Public in association with The National Asian American Theatre Company (NAATCO) presents a collection of brand-new monologues by five Asian American playwrights.

The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust recently announced the names of the 10 outstanding playwrights who will be celebrated with the 2021 Steinberg Playwright Award.

The Page 73 Playwriting Fellowship recently announced ten Semifinalists for 2022. One of the semifinalists is Playwriting alum Melis Aker ’18.  Aker was selected from more than 300 applicants. 

This month, Professor David Henry Hwang, Playwriting alumna Paola Alexandra Soto ’20, and Playwriting student Goldie E. Patrick introduced a newly formatted festival that brings theatre to a digital audio environment.

Acting alumna Anya Banerjee ’20 and Playwriting alumnus Steven Gaultney ’11 both participated in The Will of the City, a public art piece going up alongside Theatre for a New Audience's upcoming season from September 27 through November 21.

The fourth annual International Play Reading Festival—a festival co-founded by Dean Carol Becker and Associate Professor David Henry Hwang, Theatre—was held last month, presenting readings of three plays by living international playwrights.

Playwriting alumna Ayvaunn Penn ’18 is directing Associate Professor Lynn Nottage’s play Fabulation or, the Re-Education of Undine at Jubilee Theatre. The Jubilee Theatre is a historically Black theater located in Fort Worth, Texas.

Three films by Columbia filmmakers will play at this year’s Woodstock Film Festival. They are: The Winter House, The Binding of Itzik, and Hector’s Woman.

 

Alumna Kristin Slaney ’16 was named one of Manhattan Theatre Club’s 2021 Sloan Playwriting Commission awardees.

Alumna Alix Sobler ’17 will have her new play, Hindsight, premiere at the Paradise Factory later this month.

The MAP Fund recently announced the recipients of its 2021 grant, naming two projects by SOA alumnae as awardees. La Paloma Prisoner, written by Playwriting alumna Raquel Almazan '15, and TreeTime directed by Directing alumna and professor Ashley Tata '12, will each receive $20,000 in project development funds and $5000 in general operating funds.
