Playwriting alum Sam Chanse '12 is featured as one of five writers in The Public Theater’s new production, Out of Time. In this production, The Public in association with The National Asian American Theatre Company (NAATCO) presents a collection of brand-new monologues by five Asian American playwrights.
Out of Time is conceived and directed by Obie Award-winning director Les Waters and commissioned by NAATCO. The monologues, performed by an ensemble of actors over the age of 60, explore different perspectives on age, memory, motherhood, and identity. Other playwrights include Jaclyn Backhaus, Mia Chung, Naomi Iizuka, and Anna Ouyang Moench.
Out of Time runs at The Martinson Theater from February 15 through March 13, 2022. Sam Chanse is the author of plays including Trigger, Monument, or Four Sisters (A Sloth Play), What you are now, The Opportunities of Extinction, Fruiting Bodies, The Other Instinct, Lydia’s Funeral Video, about that whole dying thing, and Asian American Jesus. Her work has been developed and/or produced with the Lark, Ars Nova, the Civilians, Ensemble Studio Theater/Sloan Project, NAATCO, Magic Theatre, New York Stage & Film, Engarde Arts, Ma-Yi Theater, Cherry Lane, Leviathan Lab, Broken Nose, 24 Hour Plays, and the Ojai Playwrights’ Conference, and is published by Kaya Press (Lydia’s Funeral Video) and TCG (The Kilroys List). Chanse is a resident playwright of New Dramatists, a recent Lark Venturous Fellow, and a member of the Ma-Yi Writers Lab. She was recently a participant in New York Stage and Film’s inaugural NYSAF NEXUS project.
