The Legacy of Milos Forman

In 1978, esteemed director Milos Forman ​and his​ ​Screenwriting​ mentor​ Frank Daniel​ ​were appointed co-chairs of the Film Program. Under their leadership, the program flourished and became the world-renowned institution of film education that it is today. In many ways, Forman was the "creative founder" of Columbia Film, having shaped and refined its ​commitment to narrative​ filmmaking anchored in strong screenplays. He ​gave it​ a character as distinct as his own​—original, passionate​, ​intelligent​, and international.

Entre tú y Milagros, a short film directed by Mariana Saffon '19, written by Saffon and alumna Nathalie Álvarez Mesén '19, produced by Saffon and student Jorge Granados Ross, associate produced by alumnus Saim Sadiq '19 and edited by alumnus Andrew Stephen Lee '18 continues to make waves on the festival circuit by taking home the Best Narrative Short Film award at the Oscar-qualifying 28th Hamptons International Film Festival.

Former Visiting Professor Thomas Elsaesser has a new book, which will be released posthumously in March from Routledge, called The Mind-Game Film. Developed from the course Elsaesser taught at Columbia, The Mind-Game Film was completed by his colleagues and former students, among whom is Adjunct Assistant Professor Seung-hoon JeongJeong came from Korea to teach the course in Spring 2020 after Elsaesser’s passing. Still at work on Phase 2, with a lot of focus on the Production Testing Plan. Our new goal date to get Phase 2 approved is Monday, November 16. As promised, I’ll send weekly updates until we get there.

Stella For Star, co-written and directed by alumnus Nick Singer '19 and co-written by alumnus Ben Gottlieb '19, is now available to view on Filmatique. Stella for Star premiered at IFFBoston, New Orleans, St. Cloud, the Big Apple Film Festival, and it won the Hammer-to-Nail Short Film Contest.
