Francisco González ’19 Wins Prestigious Steinbeck Fellowship

Writing alumnus Francisco González ’19 has been awarded a 2023 Steinbeck Fellowship. An annual honor offered by the Center for Steinbeck Studies at San José State University, the fellowship provides a $15,000 grant to writers of any age and background, to support the completion a significant writing project. 

González, a writer living in East Los Angeles, was recently awarded an O. Henry Prize for his short story “Clean Teen.” The story was published in Gulf Coast after winning the 2020 Gulf Coast Prize in Fiction. Clean Teen was also named a finalist for Narrative Magazine’s Winter 2020 Story Contest. González’s work appears or is forthcoming in Arts & Letters, The Southern Review, ZYZZYVA, and elsewhere.

The Steinbeck Fellows Program at San José State University was generously funded by Martha Heasley Cox. The program is named after the famous writer John Steinbeck, and is inspired by his lifelong contributions to literature, journalism, and environmental causes.
