Columbia Filmmakers Win 2024 Writers Guild Awards, Several Nominations

The 2024 Writers Guild Awards were held on April 14 at the Hollywood Palladium, where several Columbia filmmakers were named winners for their incredible work. 

Writing alumna Jean Kyoung Frazier '18 took home the award in the Limited Series category for her work on Beef, which features Steven Yeung and Ali Wong as two strangers who can't seem to let go of the animosity born of a road rage-incited accident.

In the category of Original Screenplay, the award went to David Hemingson (LAW '90) for The Holdovers, a heart-wrenching story of the unexpected connection forged between a lonely teacher and his wayward student.

Writers Joanna Rothkopf (JRN ’14) and Tim Carvell (CC ’95) won in the category of Comedy/Variety Talk Series award for their work on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, staple of late night television.

2024 Writers Guild Award Nominations have been announced, and several Columbia filmmakers have been nominated for their stellar work in film and television. 

In the Original Screenplay category, Theatre alumna Celine Song '14 is nominated for Past Lives. The film, which Song wrote and directed, has been making waves since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023. Greta Gerwig (BC '06) is also nominated for Barbie, along with David Hemingson (LAW '90) for The Holdovers.

Sean Mullin '06 was nominated for the Documentary Screenplay award for his work on It Ain't Over, an intimate portrait of baseball legend Yogi Berra. 

Will Graham '06 received a nomination in the Limited Series category for his work on Daisy Jones and the Six, which follows the rise and fall of the eponymous rock band through 1970s Los Angeles. The series is executive produced by James Ponsoldt '05. For her work on the much-lauded BeefJean Kyoung Frazier '18 also received recognition in this category. 

In the Comedy Series category, Ben Philippe (CC '11) was nominated for Only Murders in the Building as a writer on the series. Many alums are involved in the popular streaming show, including Chris Teague '06 as a Director of Photography and Director, along with Directors Cherien Dabis '04 and Jamie Babbit (BC '93). The series tracks three true crime obsessed characters that find themselves involved in a crime that takes place in their Upper West Side building. 

Finally, Joanna Rothkopf (JRN '14) and Tim Carvell (CC '95) received nominations for the Comedy/Variety Talk Series award for their work on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, the wildly popular late-night talk show that explores today’s pressing political, social and cultural issues.


The 2024 Writers Guild Award winners will be announced at a ceremony in the Hollywood Palladium on Sunday April 14, 2024.
