Beginning to End the Climate Crisis: A History of our Future | Deutsches Haus at NYU presents the book launch of Beginning to End the Climate Crisis: A History of Our Future (Brandeis University Press) with the book’s authors, Luisa Neubauer and Alexander Reppening, as well as the book’s English-language translator and the director of the Center for German and European Studies (CGES) at Brandeis University, Sabine von Mering. This in-depth conversation will focus on German climate activism and justice, what must be done to protect a livable future for our planet, and what lessons a U.S. audience can learn from their European counterparts. One Book, Five Writers: Translating Jaguars' Tomb | Angélica Gorodischer’s novel Jaguars’ Tomb (Tumba de jaguares) is made up of three linked sections, each credited to a different fictional author. The protagonist of one section becomes the author of the next. Among Gorodischer’s many novels, it is the one that most directly addresses the abductions and disappearances that occurred under the military dictatorship of 1976-83. Each of the three parts repeats images from the others, in particular the octagonal room that is in turn the jaguars’ tomb, the central space of the torture center, the heart of an abandoned house that hides an adulterous affair. Gorodischer’s novel is both an intriguing puzzle and a meditation on how to write about, or through, violence, injustice, and loss. The novel plays with the repetitive possibilities of words and images, and raises questions about representation and writing, about whether art can offer refuge or resolution, and about the extent to which a writer’s authority must derive from experience rather than imagination. World Poetry in Translation with Patricio Ferrari | World Poetry in Translation invites you to join us for a multilingual poetry reading and discussion on the craft of translation with Wang Yin & Juan Arabia. Wang Yin is a poet, photographer, art critic, and reporter. His photography has been exhibited in both China, as well as internationally. Yin has curated the international “Poetry Comes to the Museum” reading series at the Minsheng Museum in Shanghai since 2012. His 2015 collection, Limelight, won two of China’s top poetry prizes, and his poetry has been translated into French, Spanish, Japanese, and Polish, among others. The New York Review of Books published his A Summer Day in the Company of Ghosts in 2022. Juan Arabia is a poet, translator and literary critic. He is the founder and director of the cultural and literary project Buenos Aires Poetry. Arabia is also the in-house literary critic for the Cultural Supplement of Diario Perfil and Revista Ñ of Diario Clarín. Among his most recent poetry titles are Desalojo de la Naturaleza [Eviction of Nature] (Buenos Aires Poetry, 2018), Hacia Carcassonne [Towards Carcassonne] (Pre-Textos, 2021), and Bulmenia (Buenos Aires Poetry, 2022). Pirkko Saisio’s autofictional novel, in Mia Spangenberg’s tender translation from Finnish, is a mesmerizing account of radical politics and sexual awakening in a series of farewells—to her mother, to the idealism of youth, to friends and lovers, and finally to her grown daughter. In Translation: Brazil’s Macunaíma: The Hero with No Character with Katrina Dodson, Madhu H. Kaza, John Keene, and Musician Iara Rennó | Join us to celebrate Katrina Dodson’s long-awaited translation of the Brazilian modernist epic novel Macunaíma: The Hero with No Character by Mário de Andrade. This landmark 1928 novel follows the adventures of the shapeshifting Macunaíma and his brothers as they leave their Amazon home for a whirlwind tour of Brazil, cramming four centuries and a continental expanse into a single mythic plane. Having lost a magic amulet, the hero and his brothers journey to Sao Paulo to retrieve the talisman that has fallen into the hands of an Italo-Peruvian captain of industry (who is also a cannibal giant). Written over six delirious days—the fruit of years of study—Macunaíma magically synthesizes dialect, folklore, anthropology, mythology, flora, fauna, and pop culture to examine Brazilian identity. This brilliant translation by Katrina Dodson has been many years in the making and includes an extensive section of notes, providing essential context for this magnificent work. Dodson will be joined in conversation with poet and scholars Madhu H. Kaza and John Keene. McNally Jackson and The Onassis Foundation Present A World Poet: On Translating Cavafy, with Daniel Mendelsohn & Jana Prikryl | Celebrated Cavafy scholar and a noted translator of his work Daniel Mendelsohn will engage in conversation with acclaimed poet Jana Prikryl on Cavafy’s stature as a “poet of the world,” which will consider the poet’s biography, the global influences on his work, as well as the art of translation, and the process of bringing his work into another place and time. This event is part of a series of conversations and in-store activations celebrating C. P. Cavafy's impact on modern poetry, his intellectual legacy, and his identity as a queer man who deftly danced between the ancient world and the modern metropolis. McNally Jackson bookstores will be transformed into living invitations for passers by to discover or reconsider Cavafy and his canon. Through National Poetry Month and the duration of the festival, each of McNally Jackson’s seven city-wide locations from Nolita to Laguardia Airport, will house artfully made tiny poetry libraries, window displays dedicated to the poet and his work, and Cavafy-inspired “Author Picks” curated by Festival artists and partners. Colloquy: Translators in Conversation | Join us for the fifth installment of Colloquy: Translators in Conversation, with readings and discussion from Kaiama Glover, Aaron Coleman, and Urayoán Noel on translating the Caribbean. Colloquy is a new event series presented by World Poetry Books in collaboration with Montez Press Radio and partnering event spaces which invite translators to engage with live audiences in an exploration of the art of translation. Since the fall of 2022, World Poetry's Colloquy event series provides a forum for translators to engage with live audiences in an exploration of the art of translation. Each Colloquy event presents a group of two to four translators of recently published works for short readings and extended conversations moderated by Colloquy's curator C.
