PEN America presents the Women in Translation Month Reading Series | This August we once again celebrate Women in Translation (#WiT) Month! Organized under the support of the PEN America Translation Committee, these events bring together three panels of translators, joined by their authors, working in a diversity of languages. The readings will be followed by brief Q&A discussions. For Session 1, the panelists will be: Mayada Ibrahim (trans.) and Najlaa Eltom (Arabic); Sabrina Jaszi (trans.) and Alisa Ganieva (Russian); Munawwar Abdulla (trans.) and Muyesser Abdul'ehed (Hendan)(Uyghur); Cristina Pinto-Bailey (trans.) and Cristiane Sobral (Brazilian Portuguese); and Miriam Calleja (trans.) and Nadia Mifsud (Maltese). Ethan Chua presents Sky Ladders with Guest Authors | P&T Knitwear is pleased to welcome Ethan Chua to celebrate the release of their first chapbook, Sky Ladders. An extended eulogy, a journey to the underworld, and a translingual sequence of dreams, Sky Ladders is a collection of multilingual poems and translations dedicated to those who passed away in the tragic anti-Asian shootings in Atlanta, 2021. Ethan will be joined in conversation by Kimberly Alidio, the author of Teeter; Monica Sok, the author of A Nail the Evening Hangs On; and Emily Lee Luan, the author of 回 / Return. Brian Robert Moore presents You, Bleeding Childhood, with Merve Emre | P&T Knitwear is pleased to welcome Brian Robert Moore for a celebration of his translation of Michele Mari's collection You, Bleeding Childhood with a discussion, audience Q&A, and book signing. Cult classics since their first publication, these loosely connected stories stand as the ideal introduction to an encyclopedic fantasist on a par with Kafka, Poe, and Borges. Gutekunst Prize of the Friends of Goethe New York | The winner of the thirteenth annual Gutekunst Prize of the Friends of Goethe New York is Betsy Carter for her translation of an excerpt from Simone Scharbert’s novel Rosa in Grau. Eine Heimsuchung (edition AZUR, 2022). Join us for a festive evening celebrating both Betsy Carter and the art of translation. Danielle Drori, associate faculty member at the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research, will give the keynote address about the role of translation in facilitating cultural dialogue within contemporary society.
