SUMMER 2025

This class tends to fill early, but spots can open up as students' plans change. Interested students who cannot register because the course is at capacity will be put on a waitlist. They will be offered places in the course as they become available.

Painting I is an introductory course designed to teach students the fundamentals of oil painting through observation. Students will engage with various still-life materials and participate in sequential drawing and painting exercises to explore composition, perspective, contrast, color theory, and essential techniques for developing strong painting skills. At the beginning of the semester, the focus will be on group exercises. As the semester progresses and students become more familiar with the painting process, they will have the opportunity to set up and paint their own still-life arrangements or pursue personal imagery in their work.

Columbia students do not need to apply, but they do need to register. All visiting students will need to apply to the School of Professional Studies and register upon acceptance.
