The Legacy of Milos Forman

In 1978, esteemed director Milos Forman ​and his​ ​Screenwriting​ mentor​ Frank Daniel​ ​were appointed co-chairs of the Film Program. Under their leadership, the program flourished and became the world-renowned institution of film education that it is today. In many ways, Forman was the "creative founder" of Columbia Film, having shaped and refined its ​commitment to narrative​ filmmaking anchored in strong screenplays. He ​gave it​ a character as distinct as his own​—original, passionate​, ​intelligent​, and international.

The Independent Spirit Awards nominations are out, and six nominations this year recognize Columbia alumni. Assistant Professor Shrihari Sathe '09 has been nominated for the Producers Award. Alumna Bora Kim ‘11 recently released her first feature film, House of Hummingbird. Kim is the writer, director, and co-producer of the film, which had its world premiere this month at the Busan International Film Festival, a major Asian film festival. House of Hummingbird has been met with praise and won the Audience Award as well as the NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) Award.

Film alumni Barbara Cigarroa '18Ellie Foumbi '17 and current student Johnson Cheng were selected at this year’s New York Film Festival’s Artist Academy. The Artist Academy, in its eighteenth edition, is “an immersive four-day program for filmmakers early in their careers. Tapping into both the Lincoln Center and New York film communities, the private four-day program is comprised of talks, workshops, and screenings” as stated in the press release by the festival’s website.

ThrillHer, a series of female-directed thrillers curated by Film Professor Bette Gordon, will screen at The Roxy Cinema throughout the month of September. 

The 75th Annual Venice Film Festival runs from August 29th to September 8th, and this year it will include numerous films written, directed, and produced by Columbia filmmakers.

Associate Film Professor and Columbia College alumnus Ramin Bahrani CC '96 will serve on the international jury for the eighth-annual Luigi De Laurentiis Venice Award for a Debut Film – Lion of the Future award, a prize that recognizes the best feature-length film from across all sections in this year’s Venice Film Festival.

Columbia University Blue List Script Competition connects the Film Program’s most talented recent graduates with leading professionals in the world of film and television. The Blue List represents the most esteemed, un-produced screenplays and television pilots written by Film & Playwriting graduates of the Columbia University’s School of the Arts.
