Getting Ready for Registration 2

November 23, 2020

Hello Second Year Students,

Be sure to use some time prior to December 1 to think about your spring schedule and what balance of courses will work best for you in your time zone.  We are making updates to spring courses daily and will have all confirmed information posted by December 1.  Please also check SSOL for holds on your account and try to get them resolved before registration opens on 12/1.  Remember that registration is a weeks long process and that you will have additional registration appointments in January to revise your registration.  Enrollment in courses will fluctuate, so it pays to keep an eye on any courses you are interested in, as seats frequently do become available.  This is your final semester taking courses for credit, so make sure you will complete a minimum of 60 credits by the end of this academic year.

1) This week I will be working with other staff to place you in core workshops, following these principles:

Screenwriting IV - you will continue with the same instructor.  If you plan to declare Screenwriting/TV Writing as your concentration, this course is required.  If you are sure you will declare Directing, you can treat this course as an optional elective.

Directing IV - You will be assigned a different Dir instructor.  If you plan to declare Directing as your concentration, this course is required.  If you are sure you will declare Screenwriting/ TV Writing, you must take this course if you plan to make a portfolio film.  Otherwise, you can treat it as an optional elective.

If you have a hold on your account, we cannot register you until it is removed, but we will be able to hold spaces for you in your assigned sections.  You will be able to view your schedule for these workshops in SSOL once registered.

2) Beginning December 1, you can add electives during your SSOL appointment times (up to 18 total credits) that work with your required workshop schedule.

Recommended electives you can add yourself using SSOL beginning Dec 1:

Analysis of Film Language (fulfills HTC/FMS requirement, asynchronous film screening possible for students with schedule issues, Thurs 1:30 - 5:15pm, call # 13897)
Directing Actors IV (see DOC for schedule/call #)
Acting for Scr/Dir (see DOC for schedule/call #)
Cinematography (Tues, 6-9pm, Spring A, call # 16332)
TV Writing (for those who will pursue/declare TV Writing, see DOC for schedule/call #)

Story Gym (Fri 9-12, Spring A, 1.5 credits, will be posted in DOC when course is approved and set up)

Use the Directory of Classes to identify other courses you might be interested in.  When you click to get the detail in Vergil on a particular course, it will show which schools have permission to register.  If SOA or GSAS is listed, you should be able to register online.  If SOA is not listed, you may need to seek instructor or department permission to register for the class.  For these transactions, you will need to fill out a Registration Adjustment Form, get permission from the instructor/department and then send the form to me for approval.  It will then go to Student Affairs to get you registered.
