Michael Cumpsty

Michael’s Broadway appearances include Machinal, The Winslow Boy, End of the Rainbow (Tony Award nomination), Sunday in the Park with George, The Constant Wife, Democracy, Enchanted April, 42nd Street, Copenhagen, Electra, 1776, Racing Demon, The Heiress, Translations, Timon of Athens (Bayfield Award), La Bête, and Artist Descending a Staircase.

Off-Broadway credits include Hamlet (Obie Award), Richard II and Richard III co-directed with Brian Kulick (CSC); Twelfth Night, Timon of Athens, All's Well That Ends Well, Hamlet, Cymbeline, and The Winter's Tale (all for the New York Shakespeare Festival); The Body of an American (Primary Stages), The Art of Success (MTC) and Man and Superman (Roundabout).

At Two River Theatre, Michael directed Third and The Importance of Being Earnest, and performed in Much Ado About Nothing, Absurd Person Singular, Present Laughter, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Lion in Winter, and Dancing at Lughnasa.

He has appeared in many of America's other premiere regional theaters, and played Leontes in The Winter's Tale for the Royal Shakespeare Company at their home in Stratford-upon-Avon.

On TV he has been a series regular on Severance and L.A. Law, and has appeared in many shows including Barry, Tommy, Boardwalk Empire, Nurse Jackie, The Knick, and Star Trek: Voyager.

His film credits include Eat Pray Love, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Collateral Beauty, Starting Out in the Evening, The Ex, Flags of our Fathers, The Visitor, The Ice Storm, Fatal Instinct, State of Grace, Downtown Express, and Burning Blue.

Michael teaches privately, has been a guest teacher in the graduate acting programs at both NYU and Columbia universities, and taught for many years at the New York Shakespeare Festival. His other directing credits include W.H. Auden's For the Time Being and The Bespoke Overcoat by Wolf Mankowitz.
