Hector Prats

Hector Prats is a director and screenwriter born in Barcelona and based in New York City. He earned his MFA in Film at Columbia University (2023), with the support of the Fundació La Caixa fellowship. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Audiovisual Communication from Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

During his time in college, Hector worked as a film critic, attended film festivals as a youth jury member, and worked for several production companies and independent film productions in various roles. Through directing music videos, he started working as a commercial director.

In Spain, he directed the short films Caçador and Bones in the waters. At Columbia University he has directed the shorts Heaven is Nobody’s, currently starting its festival run, and Enloquecer, which screened at Palm Springs Shortfest 2022, got an Honorable mention as Best Narrative Short Film at Tacoma Film Festival 2022, and was then named a Vimeo Staff Pick after premiering online through Short of the Week.

For his music videos, he has received the Best Young Director Award at Soundie Music Video Awards 2017, as well as nominations as one of the 18 best music videos of the year 2018 by MTV Spain, and Best Music Video at Premios MIN 2019.

His stories dive into the altered reality of strange, obsessive characters, as well as touching notes of mysticism and absurd humor, all always guided by the world-inspiring presence of music.
