The 64th Annual Drama Desk Awards presented by Broadway News were announced June 2, 2019 at The Town Hall in New York City.

Hadestown, directed by alumna Rachel Chavkin ’08 (Directing) won in eight of the nine categories it was nominated, including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical.

Recently, The New York Times Style Magazine, T Magazine did a special feature where they asked 15 playwrights to create original works around their visions of America set in 2024.

NJ Agwuna '18 has been named as one of the renowned Drama League 2019 Directors Project fellowship.

 

The Historical Range of Ursus Americanus is the next Directing Thesis premiering at Lenfest Center for the Arts tomorrow. 

The upcoming directing thesis, Hadrian & Antinous tells the story about the journey of Antinous, a young man from Greece, who meets and falls in love with Roman Emperor Hadrian. Through the development of their relationship, we see Antinous transform from an unknown young man into a god, who is worshipped for 200 years. This new play unearths an ancient true story, telling it in a modern way that speaks to what it is to love, grieve and remember those that have been forgotten. 

Caborca is a multilingual experimental theatre and film company founded by Artistic Director alumnus Javier Antonio González ’06 (Directing), along with the help of many alumni. “Caborca steals its name from the novel The Savage Detectives, by Roberto Bolaño, in which a magazine of the same name is the official organ of visceral realism.” Caborca’s members come from all over the world. The company’s mission is to create “sprawling, adventurous works in theatre and film.” Its aim is to “bridge language, background and media,” they wish to create…

For its 2019-2020 season, La Jolla Playhouse will present the world premiere of The Coast Starlight by Keith Bunin, directed by alumna Tyne Rafaeli '14, beginning August 20th thru September 15th at the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre.

Directing alumna Nana Dakin '18 assisted tony-nominated director and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Leigh Silverman on Wild Goose Dreams an original play with music at The Public Theater which closed in December. Alumna Janelle Caso '17 was also the Assistant Stage Manager of the production. New York Magazine called the show “[w]himsical, powerful, and poignant. Quickly shifting and densely layered … visually delightful. A senses-tingling treat.”

Mikhaela Mahony's third-year directing thesis As You Like It premieres next month at The Lenfest Center for the Arts. 

Jeffrey Page’s third-year directing thesis The Woman / The Man: An Evening of Two One-Act Plays premieres next week. The evening is a theatrical double feature comprised of two Obie Award-winning plays: Adrienne Kennedy’s Funnyhouse of a Negro and Suzan-Lori Parks’ The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World AKA the Negro Book of the Dead. Written nearly thirty years apart, these two pieces remain as haunting and relevant as the day each was written.

The next thesis production, Medea directed by Miriam Grill, premieres January 23rd at The Flexible Performance Space at Lenfest Center for the Arts.
