A Distinct Society, written by Theatre Directing alumnus Kareem Fahmy ’07, will have a virtual reading as part of the International Voices Project (IVP) Chicago in collaboration with the Consulate General of Canada in Chicago, Silk Road Rising, and the Citadel Theatre of Canada.

Theatre Directing alumni Mei Ann Teo ’14 and Shayok Misha Chowdhury ’16 will present their work at Prelude Festival 2020. Teo will present her piece hold, and Chowdhury will present episodes from his series Vichitra.

Theatre alumnus and Miami New Drama Artistic Director Michel Hausmann ’14 will stage 7 Deadly Sins — Temptation in the Magic City in vacant Miami Beach storefronts this fall.

Vichitra by Theatre alumnus Shayok Misha Chowdhury ’16, an episodic, audiovisual project, will be produced at The Bushwick Starr this winter. Chowdhury’s Vichitra is “the fourth installment of an experiment in queer South Asian imagination,” where “Carnatic classical music is the shapeshifting protagonist.”

Theatre alumnae Daaimah Mubashshir ’15, Gethsemane Herron-Coward ’19, Zizi Majiid ’20, and Katherine Wilkinson ’19 have been selected for the 2020-2021 Women’s Project Theater Lab. 

Alumnus Saheem Ali ’07 joins The Public Theater as one of its new Associate Artistic Directors, along with Shanta Thake.

Two films by Columbia alumni and current students showed at the Maryland Film Festival from June 12 until June 21.

Directing alumnus Saheem Ali ’07 directs the upcoming production of Richard II as a part of the annual Shakespeare in the Park series with The Public Theater. Free Shakespeare in the Park has been a pinnacle of New York City artistic endeavors for more than 60 years. The annual productions celebrate the vision of the Public Theater’s founder Joseph Papp, to create theatre that is of, by, and for all people. 

Theatre alumna Ashley Tata '12 launched her livestream production of Mad Forest, a co-production of Theater for a New Audience and the Fisher Center at Bard College. The show played online three times between May 22 and May 27 with quarantined Bard acting students from 14 remote locations via Zoom.

SKiNFoLK: An American Show by alumna Jillian Walker ’17 was selected as a New York Times Critic’s Pick. The production had its first presentation at The Bushwick Starr as a part of the Star Reading Series in 2016. We spoke with Walker about the play’s inaugural reading in 2016. This season, SKiNFoLK returned to the Bushwick Starr with a full length production. The 2020 critically acclaimed production is directed by alumna Mei Ann Teo ’14.

Directing Alumnus Marc Atkinson '16 associate directed Hamlet at St. Ann’s Warehouse alongside Director Yaël Farber. The production transferred to St. Ann’s and screened earlier this month, following a critically acclaimed run at The Gate Theatre in Dublin, in the fall of 2018.
