Under the Radar Festival, New York City’s foremost festival of experimental theatre, will return on Janurary 5, 2024 under the leadership of festival founder and Adjunct Assistant Professor Mark Russell.

The festival, which seeks to showcase the work of emerging theatre artists, is co-produced by Russell and Theatre Management and Producing alumna Sami Pyne ’20, along with Thomas O. Kriegsmann.

Russell was formerly an Associate Artistic Director at The Public Theater and the head of the Public’s Devised Theater Initiative. When the Public decided to stop producing the Under the Radar Festival this year, Russell set out to find external producers for the event, an endeavor which proved successful. Originating at Saint Ann’s Warehouse in 2005, the festival moved to The Public Theater in 2006. This year, Under the Radar will return as a city-wide, multi-venue event that will run throughout the month of January and feature works presented by a prestigious lineup of organizations, including La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, Soho Rep, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and St. Ann’s Warehouse, among others.

Several of the plays which will be produced as part of the festival have been announced, including Public Obscenities by Directing alumnus Shayok Misha Chowdhury ’16, a play which received three Drama League and four Drama Desk Award nominations. A full lineup of productions will be announced on November 1, 2023.
