Theatre Alumna Daaimah Mubashshir ’15 Brings ‘The Immeasurable Want of Light’ to Atlantic Theater Company's Reading Festival

Theatre alumna Daaimah Mubashshir ’15 is set to co-host the exciting annual reading festival, (Writ)ual Mix Mixfest 2023, at the Atlantic Theater Company. This festival, running from August 7 to August 16, 2023, serves as a platform for original plays to be performed as free readings. 

This year, Mubashshir is not only co-hosting the festival but also sharing her work through a reading of a reading of The Immeasurable Want of Light, a play about a black, overweight artist coming of age in an alternate universe. The play, scheduled on Wednesday, August 16, consists of twenty-eight distinct vignettes of varying language, styles and forms that journey through shifting perspectives of living in black skin.

(Writ)ual Mix: Traditions of the Diaspora MixFest follows the Atlantic Theatre Company's Asian American MixFest in 2017, Middle Eastern MixFest in 2018, Immigrant MixFest in 2019, African Caribbean MixFest in 2021, and last year's First Gen MixFest.

Mubashshir’s published works include Molasses and a Blue Coat (Kenyon Review Online, 2019), The Zero Loop (No Tokens Journal, 2019), Come with Me - Solve for X in The Occasional 2, edited by Will Arbery (53rd State Press, 2018), and The Immeasurable Want of Light (MacDowell, 3 Hole Press, 2018). Selected stage plays include Night of Power, Room Enough (MacDowell, Fire This Time Festival, Clubbed Thumb, Pride Plays, Playwrights Center), The Chronicles of Cardigan and Khente, and the musical Emily Black is a Total Gift (New Georges). She has been a guest speaker at the Yale School of Drama, Williams College, Skidmore College, and Kennesaw State University.
