The play Junk, written by Film Alumnus Ayad Akhtar '02 was nominated for Best Play, together with The Children, Farinelli and the King, Latin History for Morons and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Director and all acting categories. The musical SpongeBob SquarePants received a whopping 12 nominations, and one of those went to Columbia College Alumnus Thomas Kitt '96 for Best Orchestrations. This Nickelodeon musical has music by John Legend, Cindy Lauper, Steven Tyler, Sara Bareilles, and other pop artists, all contributing to its nomination for Best Original Score.
The 2018 Regional Theatre Tony Award was awarded to the company, La MaMa E.T.C., under the Artistic Direction of Alumna Mia Yoo '98, who assumed the role after La Mama's founder Ellen Stewart. In a joint statement, Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League and Heather Hitchens, president of the American Theatre Wing, said: “La MaMA E.T.C. is a staple of the New York theatre scene. It is an exciting space where artists can grow, create, and push boundaries, and we are thrilled to be able to honor them this year.” Today, the company presents more than 70 productions a year, and its facility contains four theatres, an art gallery, housing for traveling artists, and an extensive archival collection.
Now it’s up to the voters. There are 841 Tony voters — investors and producers, as well as actors, directors, designers, journalists and others — who are eligible to cast ballots for most categories. The 2018 Tony Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 10th.
