Professor Brenda Wineapple's essay, The First President Ever to Be Impeached, is the cover story in the spring issue of The American Scholar. It is adapted from her forthcoming book, The Impeachers: The Trial of Andrew Johnson and the Dream of a Just Nation, to be published by Random House in May.
English-language translations of The Bacchae by Euripides, by Poet and classicist Aaron Poochigian '16, produced in 2018 by SITI Company at the Getty Theater in Los Angeles and BAM in New York, and Four Plays by Aristophanes were sold in an exclusive two-book deal to Norton. Poochigian was also just named the winner of the 2020 Richard Wilbur Poetry Award for his book American Divine.
Current fiction student Francisco González was named a Glimmer Train finalist for his short story, Increments of Dust. He was also a finalist for Beloit Fiction Journal's 2019 Hamlin Garland Award for his short story Panda Express.
The upcoming directing thesis, Hadrian & Antinous tells the story about the journey of Antinous, a young man from Greece, who meets and falls in love with Roman Emperor Hadrian. Through the development of their relationship, we see Antinous transform from an unknown young man into a god, who is worshipped for 200 years. This new play unearths an ancient true story, telling it in a modern way that speaks to what it is to love, grieve and remember those that have been forgotten.

Caborca is a multilingual experimental theatre and film company founded by Artistic Director alumnus Javier Antonio González ’06 (Directing), along with the help of many alumni. “Caborca steals its name from the novel The Savage Detectives, by Roberto Bolaño, in which a magazine of the same name is the official organ of visceral realism.” Caborca’s members come from all over the world. Broadway News recently announced that Acting alumnus David Wilson Barnes '99 will join the cast of the production, Ink. After its critically-acclaimed run at London's West End, the show will make its Broadway debut in April. Barnes will star alongside Bertie Carvel as Rupert Murdoch and Jonny Lee Miller as Larry Lamb.
Acting alumna Heather Alicia Simms’ '96 recently appeared in By the Way, Meet Vera Stark by faculty member, Lynn Nottage. “[…] the style is much more cutting as Vera’s earthy roommate Lottie McBride (Heather Alicia Simms, great with gags) […]”, according to Variety. She also recently appeared in Nottage’s Fabulation, produced by Signature Theater.
Visual Arts professor Jon Kessler was recently in an exhibition with multiple installations in Shanghai at Chronus Art Center as well as in Guangzhou at the Guangdong Museum of Art.
Columbia University continues to have a strong presence at prestigious film festivals this year. Twenty three Columbia alumni, faculty, and current students including writers, directors, producers, actors, cinematographers, and post-supervisors, will showcase at this year’s Tribeca film festival which runs April 24–May 26.
This year, four films by Columbia students and alumni will head to the 28th annual Aspen Shortsfest, which will run from April 2-7, 2019.
The Immigration Game, a screenplay written by current student Asad Farooqui is one of three winners at the Atlanta Film Festival Screenplay Competition in the Feature Film category. Farooqui’s feature script Bin and pilot script Brown Country were also semifinalists in the competition along with the short script, Circles, written by alumna Renee Marie Petropoulos '17 who was a finalist.
Alumna Carly Inghram '18 will have her first book of poetry, Sometimes the Blue Trees, published by Vegetarian Alcoholic Press on March 18, 2019. The collection is available for pre-order now.
Epizoda?, a film written and directed by Graeme Cole, with sound design and sound mix by Adjunct Assistant Professor, Michael Cacioppo Belantara, is now available on Tao Films.
