Acting alumnus Hal Miers ’20 is a series regular on the fifth season of Gabi DeMartino’s Blood Queens and recently wrapped filming on Daniel Roebuck’s Lucky Louie

Theatre Alumnus Marc Atkinson ’16 was recently awarded the 2020 Gate Bursary from The Gate Theatre, Dublin. The award facilitates the development of new work both at the theatre and remotely. Atkinson will receive institutional support during a year-long residency. 

After months of work and input from CU health experts, production staff, and faculty, I’m pleased to present two documents that will hopefully help you make sense of our spring semester.

A Distinct Society, written by Theatre Directing alumnus Kareem Fahmy ’07, will have a virtual reading as part of the International Voices Project (IVP) Chicago in collaboration with the Consulate General of Canada in Chicago, Silk Road Rising, and the Citadel Theatre of Canada.

Theatre Directing alumni Mei Ann Teo ’14 and Shayok Misha Chowdhury ’16 will present their work at Prelude Festival 2020. Teo will present her piece hold, and Chowdhury will present episodes from his series Vichitra. 

The last few months revealed that theatre can happen anywhere. To capitalize on this new artistic frontier, we are pleased to offer students the opportunity to present their work in a virtual space.

Acting alumnus Grayson Powell ’11 co-produces and appears in the short film Niles Dean Lives in a Parking Space Under the Bridge, which will screen at YoFiFest’s 2020 virtual festival. 

The twelve-minute comedy follows Niles Dean, a man who resides in a parking space beneath a bridge. After an old friend makes a surprise visit, the man must reckon with himself and his past transgressions. The film’s other co-producers include Steven Gerhardt-King and Robbie Tann, who stars as the titular character. Powell and Nemuna Ceesay appear in supporting roles. 

The Columbia University School of the Arts continued its second week of the International Play Reading Festival with a reading of Taxi Radio written (and translated from the Thai) by Nophand. 

The American Theatre Wing announced the 74th Annual Tony Award nominations today, which include many Columbia faculty, alumni, and students. In total, 24 Columbia artists worked on 12 Tony Award nominated productions, earning a collective total of 93 nominations at the 2020 Tony Awards.

The Tree - An American Rock Musical, co-written by Playwriting Student Alle Mims, will be staged by Dallas’ Imprint Theatreworks from October 29 to November 14, 2020. 

The Columbia University School of the Arts International Play Reading Festival kicked off its third year (and first virtual run) this month with a reading of Rarámuri Dreams written by Camila Villegas. Villegas is a Mexican playwright who after studying economics and living for two years with the Tarahumaras—an indigenous community of Northern Mexico—redirected her career towards theatre.

Alvarez Keko Salazar Productions and Poseidon Theatre Company are adapting short plays by Theatre Alumnus Jeffrey James Keyes ’10 into the new podcast series Drama: an aural experience.
