Film alum Chris Galletta '10, of Kings of Summer (2013) fame, is co-writer on the wildly popular new blockbuster, A Minecraft Movie. The film, based on the beloved Mojang video game, opened April 4, 2025 and made an incredible $140 million on its opening weekend, ending a Hollywood dry spell.

The fantasy adventure comedy film enjoys some serious star-power. Four misfits—Garrett "The Garbage Man" (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)—are struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the overworld—a bizarre wonderland that thrives on imagination. As they embark on this quest with expert crafter Steve (Jack Black), they discover unique qualities that they need to thrive back in the real world.

"Columbia Film’s story-first approach gave me tools I use every day while I’m writing."

When asked about the process of writing the film, Galletta reflected on the tools he first became familiar with in his time at Columbia. “I had a wonderful time in the program. I made lifelong friends and we’ve all grown up in the industry together. Columbia Film’s story-first approach gave me tools I use every day while I’m writing. Whose scene is it, what do they want, what’s stopping them, how is this forcing them to change, how can we show this change through visuals or behavior rather than just ‘telling’ the audience…The list is endless.”

The film surpassed its initial box office projection by about 75 percent, making it the highest ever first weekend total for a video game adaptation and overtaking the previous record held by The Super Mario Bros Movie released in 2023. “With the film being inspired by the bestselling video game of all time, it is no shock that audiences can’t wait to fully immerse themselves into the big, blocky world by watching this film on the big screen,” said Jerramy Hainline, EVP of Fandago. According to Michael DeLuca, Co-Chair and CEO of the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group “You can’t underestimate the value of earnest, entertaining, joyous cinema” and we agree!
