Columbia Alumni Sweep 2024 Gotham TV Award Nominations
Several School of the Arts alumni have been nominated for the inaugural 2024 Gotham TV Awards, celebrating excellence in television across various categories.
Among them is Film alumnus Jonathan Van Tulleken ’10, who co-executive produced and directed episodes of Shōgun, which has garnered multiple nominations, including Breakthrough Limited Series and Outstanding Performance for actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. The series centers around Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who discovers secrets that could tip the scales of power when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.
Theatre alumna Hallie Sekoff ’17 is credited as an executive producer for The Sympathizer, nominated for Breakthrough Limited Series. This series tells the story of a spy embedded in the South Vietnam army who flees to the United States at the end of the Vietnam War and continues to secretly report back to the Viet Cong from within a refugee community.
Under the Bridge, based on a book by late Adjunct Professor of Writing Rebecca Godfrey, has earned multiple nominations, including Breakthrough Limited Series and Outstanding Performance for Lily Gladstone. The series revolves around the true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk’s murder by a group of teenagers. Godfrey, who worked on the series before her passing, is featured as a character in the show.
“In a historic moment for The Gotham, we’re thrilled to recognize an extraordinary collection of TV series and the brilliant creators responsible for bringing them to the screen,” said Jeffrey Sharp, The Gotham’s Executive Director. “As an organization dedicated to celebrating and nurturing independent media, we know the inaugural 2024 Gotham TV Awards will honor many truly deserving creatives while widening our reach and expanding our impact. We are enormously proud to celebrate the remarkable talent represented in today’s nominations.”
Other notable Columbia alumni on the list of nominees include President Barack Obama (CC ’83), involved as an executive producer for the series Bodkin, and Agnes Chu (BUS ’08), an executive producer for Black Twitter: A People’s History. Lisa Heller (GSAS ’14) is an executive producer for Murder in Boston: Roots, Rampage & Reckoning, and Nigel Sinclair (LAW ’80) serves as an executive producer for STAX: Soulsville, U.S.A.
The inaugural Gotham TV Awards will mark the first time the ceremony is exclusively dedicated to TV. Over the past decade, the 33-year-old Gotham Awards have celebrated excellence in television and film through three main categories: Breakthrough Series (Over 40 minutes), Breakthrough Series (Under 40 minutes), and Outstanding Performance in a New Series. The awards have honored a diverse array of TV creators with Gotham Tributes, recognizing influential figures such as Steve McQueen, Ava DuVernay, and Ryan Murphy.
The awards ceremony is set for June 4, 2024. See the full list of nominees here.
