Columbia Alumni Shine in 2024 Golden Globe Nominations; Several Winners Announced

Barbie, directed and co-written by alum Greta Gerwig (BC '06), was one of the winners at last night's Golden Globe Awards. The film took home the inaugural award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. In accepting the award, star and producer Margot Robbie thanked the Golden Globes for "creating an award that celebrates movie fans." 

This new award wasn't the only Columbia win of the night. Barbie was also recognize when Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For?" took home the award for Best Original Song; and Paul Giamatti, the star of The Holdovers—written by David Hemingson (LAW '90)—won the award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture, in the Musical or Comedy category.

In the Television categories, Succession—which boasts alums Scott Ferguson '90 as Executive Producer, Shari Springer Berman '95 as Director, and Robert Pulcini '94 as Director—was a major winner, taking home the award for Best Television Series in the category of Drama. Several of the actors claimed awards as well, including the awards for Best Performance by a Female Actor in the Drama category, Best Performance by a Male Actor in the Drama category, and Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television. 

The Bear, which features alum Ebon Moss-Bachrach (CC'99) as the messy but always lovable Richie, made some waves as well, taking home the award for Best Television Series in the Musical or Comedy category, as well as both major acting awards, Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series (Musical or Comedy) and Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series (Musical or Comedy).

Nominations for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards were announced in December, with a roster that includes several works involving Columbia alumni. This year celebrates the 81st presentation of the Golden Globe Awards. 

The nominees were chosen by 95 Hollywood Foreign Press Association members and 310 international journalists, aiming to honor excellence in filmmaking and draw widespread public attention to the finest in movies and television. This edition of the awards show introduces several significant changes. Now, each category includes six nominees, expanded from the previous five. Furthermore, the Globes have added two new awards to acknowledge achievements in box office success and stand-up comedy performances.

The 81st Golden Globe Award winners will be revealed at a ceremony scheduled for January 7, 2024, broadcast from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

The film and Song herself have been nominated in several categories, including Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture, Best Motion Picture in the Drama category, and Best Motion Picture in the Non-English Language category. Song's work has been recognized with a nomination for Best Director of a Motion Picture. Actress Greta Lee, who portrays Nora, has been nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture in the Drama category.

Barbie has garnered nominations for Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture and three nominations for Best Original Song in the Motion Picture category. Gerwig's work has been acknowledged with a nomination for Best Director of a Motion Picture. The film's actors have also earned accolades with nominations for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture (Ryan Gosling) and for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture in the Musical or Comedy category (Margot Robbie). Barbie is also nominated for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

The Holdovers

The Holdovers has been nominated for Best Motion Picture in the Musical or Comedy category. Paul Giamatti, who plays Paul Hunham, has been nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture in the Musical or Comedy category. Da'Vine Joy Randolph, who plays Mary Lamb, earned a nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture.

The third season of Only Murders in the Building picks up where the second season left off: with a death. It sets off an investigation that revolves around Broadway. This season also features Meryl Streep as another actor in the Broadway production, Jesse Williams as a documentarian, and Ashley Park as a Broadway ingenue.

Only Murders in the Building has earned several nominations. It is in the running for Best Television Series in the Musical or Comedy category. The show's cast has been recognized extensively, with Meryl Streep earning a nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television, and Selena Gomez earning a nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series in the Musical or Comedy category. Additionally, the actors Martin Short and Steve Martin, who play Oliver Putnam and Charles-Haden Savage respectively, have both been nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series in the Musical or Comedy category.

The Roy family is known for controlling the biggest media and entertainment company in the world. However, their world changes when their father steps down from the company. 

Succession has garnered significant acclaim with multiple nominations. The series is vying for Best Television Series in the Drama category. J. Smith-Cameron has been nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television for her portrayal of Gerri, while Sarah Snook, who plays Shiv Roy, has been nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series in the Drama category. The actors Matthew Macfadyen (Tom Wambsgans), Alan Ruck (Connor Roy) and Alexander Skarsgård (Lukas Mattson), compete for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television. Brian Cox (Logan Roy), Jeremy Strong (Kendall Roy) and Kieran Culkin (Roman Roy) have been nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series—Drama category.

The Bear is nominated for Best Television Series in the category Musical or Comedy. Columbia College alum Moss-Barchrach is nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television, while others in the cast are nominated for acting awards as well, including Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series in the category Musical or Comedy and Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series in the category Musical or Comedy.
