'Black Adam' Written by Columbia Filmmakers is a Box Office Hit

Black Adam, the newest iteration in the DC Extended Universe co-written by two Columbia Film alumni, Rory Haines ('11) and Sohrab Noshirvani ('12)—opened in cinemas on the weekend of October 21, earning an estimated $67 million dollars at the domestic box office and $140 million worldwide.

Black Adam, the newest iteration in the DC Extended Universe co-written by two Columbia Film alumni, Rory Haines ('11) and Sohrab Noshirvani ('12)—opened in cinemas on the weekend of October 21, earning an estimated $67 million dollars at the domestic box office and $140 million worldwide. It is the highest grossing box office opening since July of this year.

The film stars Dwayne Johnson (Jumanji, Moana) in the titular role, and is a spin-off of the DC universe movie Shazam! released in 2019. The superhero film follows Black Adam nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the powers of the Egyptian gods and imprisoned. Now, he is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.


The film was not only a smashing success at the box office, but quickly became a fan favorite, and many turned to the internet to express their admiration for the buzzy new superhero movie. The film currently has a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the highest audience score for a DC theatrical film since Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Dwayne Johnson praised the audience response, stating that a “new era in the DC universe has begun.”
