David Pastor ’04 is the co-writer and co-director of Bird Box Barcelona, a new thriller that will be released by Netflix on July 14, 2023.

The film will expand on the original Bird Box film (Netflix, 2018), which starred Sandra Bullock as a mother searching for hope and a new beginning in a post-apocalyptic world—all while blindfolded from the terror that chases her. Bird Box, which is an adaptation of Josh Malerman’s novel of the same name, was a hit for the streaming service.

Bird Box Barcelona will follow a blindfolded father, Sebastian, played by Mario Casas, protecting his daughter as they look to escape from demonic entities in the desolate streets of Barcelona in a dark, sightless world. Actress Georgina Campbell, who starred in the horror blockbuster Barbarian (20th Century Studios, 2022), also stars.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Bird Box Barcelona is the first of a series of movies to expand the Bird Box universe. Pastor co-wrote and co-directed the film alongside his brother and fellow filmmaker, Àlex Pastor.

As Pastor shared in an exclusive interview with the School of the Arts, his own career took off when he decided to join forces with his brother, Àlex, who studied film in their home country, making the duo a hybrid with influences from both their native and US cultures. The brothers co-wrote and co-directed the drama Hogar, which premiered on Netflix in 2020, with Variety calling it the streaming platform’s “highest-profile Spanish original film to date.”

Bird Box Barcelona marks another creative collaboration between Pastor and Netflix.

“What Netflix adds is the ability to be all over the world at the same time,” Pastor said.
