Introduction to Moment Work

THEA S4120 - 3 POINTS
SESSION A: May 25–July 3, 2026
INSTRUCTORS: NJ Agwuna with Moises Kaufman/Tectonic Theatre
Day & Time: MW 1–4:10 PM
THEATRE
SUMMER 2026

This course has been cancelled for the Summer 2026 term.

Tectonic Theater Project, a theatre company based in New York City, has created and staged over 20 plays and musicals since 1991. Moment Work is Tectonic Theater Project’s method of devising new theater works, and of analyzing and re-imagining existing works, used to create classic works such as The Laramie Project, Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, and 33 Variations. In this class, NJ Agwuna will guide students through all three levels of Moment WorkTM, which explores the theatrical potential of all the elements of the stage (props, sound, architecture, lights, costume, etc.) in order to create strong theatrical and dramatic narratives. In this class, students will foster an appreciation for the reexamination and exploration of theatrical form and theatrical and dramatic narratives. The semester will culminate with an in-class showcase of short, devised pieces created by the students.

This course is a complementary course to THEA 4122, Dramaturgy and Moment WorkTM: Stranger than Fiction. Although it would be helpful to take both courses, neither is prerequisite for the other.

Columbia students do not need to apply, but they do need to register. All visiting students will need to apply to the School of Professional Studies and register upon acceptance.
