Dan Kleinman

Dan Kleinman’s first produced screenplay was Rage (Warner Brothers) in 1972. His screenplay for Tel Aviv on Fire (2018), written with Sameh Zoabi ’05, won the Ophir (the “Israeli Oscar”) and the Asia Pacific Screen Award (the “Asian Oscar”) for Best Screenplay. The film won Grand Prize at the International Festival of Comedy Films in Belgium. Tel Aviv on Fire is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. …. Dan has taught screenwriting at Columbia since 1996. He was chair of Film for five years and acting dean of the School of the Arts for three years. Before coming to Columbia, he taught at Princeton and at NYU. He has been a mentor at the Sundance screenwriting lab in Utah and at screenwriting labs in Belgium and Uganda. He was a visiting faculty member at La Femis in Paris, RITS in Brussels, and Sarah Lawrence College.

Alumnus Sameh Zoabi's ‘05 and Professor Dan Kleinman’s film Tel Aviv on Fire opened to glowing reviews and has been nominated for four Israeli “Ophir” Awards.

The 45th Annual Seattle International Film Festival featured two films by alumni and faculty this year, Bora Kim '11 for House of Hummingbird and Sameh Zoabi '05 and Professor Dan Kleinman for Tel Aviv on Fire. The festival took place from May 16-June 9, 2019, showcasing more than 400 films from nearly 90 countries to 140,000+ attendees.

The 75th Annual Venice Film Festival runs from August 29th to September 8th, and this year it will include numerous films written, directed, and produced by Columbia filmmakers.
