War Game, a docu-thriller co-directed by Film alumnus Tony Gerber '95, has been picked up by Submarine Deluxe and Decal Releasing, who've set dates for the film's theatrical release. Beginning with a release at Film Forum on August 2, 2024, the film will then hit wider theaters on August 9. Decal Releasing will then release War Game on VOD in the weeks leading up to the 2024 election.
The film, which premiered at Sundance, offers a gripping portrayal of a hypothetical January 6-style attack on democracy. It posits active-duty military breaking ranks to join an insurrection that soon spreads to other state capitals, culminating in a chilling moment when it’s unclear whether the president fully commands the armed forces. The simulation’s outcome hinges on several inflection points, from the government’s capacity to counter the disinformation that’s effectively spread by the insurgent side to the potential invocation of the Insurrection Act (i.e., the last resort).
The docu-thriller was co-directed by Jesse Moss and produced by Boat Rocker and Anonymous Content.
Gerber’s previous works include Full Battle Rattle, which won the SXSW Special Jury Prize, The Notorious Mr. Bout, and CNN Films’ We Will Rise: Michelle Obama's Mission to Educate Girls Around the World. Gerber has also produced the Emmy-winning Jane and the Oscar-shortlisted documentary Takeover. In 2005, he co-founded Market Road Films with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and Associate Professor Lynn Nottage.
