Upcoming graduates of the Visual Arts MFA will exhibit new video, sound, and performance artworks in a one day event at the Jewish Museum entitled In Response: Jonas Mekas.
Students have been tasked with producing new art work that responds to the Jewish Museum’s current exhibition, Jonas Mekas: The Camera Was Always Running, the first American museum survey of the Lithuanian-born artist who helped shape the avant-garde in New York City.
The exhibition surveys Mekas’ 70-year career and includes 11 films presented in an immersive environment, photography, and previously unseen archival materials. His work was profoundly informed by his refugee experience; exploring the relationship between exile and creativity, loss, memory, and longing for home.
Featured graduates of the Visual Arts MFA include: Kaela Mei-Chee Chambers, Fadl Fakhouri, Linnéa Gad (with Will Epstein), Elisheva Gavra (with Layla Klinger); Jacq Groves; Erin Holland; Julia Jalowiec (with Josh Jalowiec); Char Jeré and Meaghan Elyse Lueck; Sophie Kovel; John Thomas Levee; Alison Nguyen; and Vivian Vivas (with Claire Gendler).
In Response: Jonas Mekas is free to attend with RSVP and opens on Sunday at 6:30 pm.
