Slingshot by recent alumnus Cyrée Jarelle Johnson ’19 was a finalist for the prestigious Community of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP) Firecracker Award. Though the award went to Motion Studies by Jena Osman, Slingshot, in its nomination for this award, has joined a formidable list of new poetry.
“The CLMP Firecracker Awards for Independently Published Literature are given annually to celebrate books and magazines that make a significant contribution to our literary culture and the publishers that strive to introduce important voices to readers far and wide,” according to the CLMP website.
Winner of the Lambda award for gay poetry, Slingshot has received much critical acclaim since its publication late last year, inspiring short reviews from The New York Times and Ms. Magazine.
Johnson is a poet and writer from Piscataway, NJ. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Boston Review, WUSSY, The Wanderer, Vice, Rewire News, The Root, and Nat. Brut, among other publications. He earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University with support from Davis Putter Scholarship Fund.
