Patrice Renee Washington '14 in Solo and Group Exhibitions this Summer

July 23, 2018

Alumna and staff member  Patrice Renee Washington '14 is exhibiting her work in two shows this summer: a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (MCA Denver), and a group show at Urban Glass in New York City.

Washington trained as a sculptor while she was a graduate student at Columbia, and went on to participate in residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, the Museum of Arts and Design, the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop Program (SIP), and served as the Ceramics Artist-in-Residence at Anderson Ranch Arts Center.

Her solo exhibit at MCA Denver is titled Patrice Renee Washington: Charts, Parts, and Holders. In this exhibit, Washington adds to her series of ceramic bas-reliefs showcasing objects such as yams and fried pork rinds, which are “subjects [that] have in common stereotyped associations with Black bodies and culture.” Her aesthetic is modernist, adapting “the grid and monochrome [convention] to both elevate the banal items she depicts and also call critical attention to them...Presented together, these new works prompt questions about racial stereotypes and signifiers and the extent to which such ideas are conveyed in the marketing and circulation of consumer products.”

On Reflection, Washington’s group exhibit at Urban Glass, features her and four other artists’ work. The participating artists all used mirrors as a material in their exhibited pieces. The show examines “reflection in the physical sense, and reflecting the conditions of contemporary experience.”

Washington’s past solo shows include galleries and art spaces in New York City such as Underdonk, Time Equities, and Blackburn 20/20. Most recently, she was in a group exhibition at Abrons Art Center.

On Reflection runs through July 28th at the Agnes Visual Arts Center in Brooklyn, and Patrice Renee Washington: Charts, Parts, and Holders runs at The Museum of Contemporary Art Denver through August 26, 2018.
