'Outsiders,' by Gleb Osatinski and Joshua Harris '20, Wins Best Student Film at Paris Film Festival

The short drama Outsiders, directed by Film student Gleb Osatinksi and co-written by Osatinski and alumnus Joshua Harris ’20, won the award for Best Student Film at the Paris Film Festival.

The Paris Film Festival is a monthly film festival established in response to the international demand for art films and showcase opportunities for emerging filmmakers. Prior to the pandemic, the Paris Film Festival organized screenings and networking events in the heart of Paris. Currently, the festival operates entirely online. 

Outsiders follows Dmitry and Zhenya, Russians living in the US on an expired visa with their seven-month-old daughter Dasha. When the baby suffers an accident, Zhenya wants to take her to the hospital, but Dmitry is reluctant, fearing their discovery. The cast includes Yana Mulder, Luna Krauskopf, Dmitry Tagovitskiy, and John Pakow. 

Osatinski is a writer, director, and producer. His award-winning short films have screened at film festivals around the world: Short Shorts Film Festival and Asia, Asiana International Film Festival, Krakow International Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Sarasota Film Festival, and New York and Los Angeles Shorts Film Festivals. His film The Quantified Self was nominated for Best Narrative Short at Woodstock Film Festival, has received a Programmers Award at Sidewalk Film Festival, and a Runner UP award at the Boston Underground Film Festival. It was also featured on ARTE TV in France and Germany.

Before studying at the School of the Arts, Harris graduated from the University of Chicago, where he majored in Theater and Performance Studies (TAPS) and English. During his time there, Harris worked on numerous University Theater (UT) and Classical Entertainment Society (CES) productions. Some highlighted credits include writer and director of croMagnum, composer and sound designer of Cowboy Mouth and As You Like It, director of Eh JoeCaptain Hammer in Dr. Horrible, and director of Urinetown. Additionally, Harris was the assistant music director and a music arranger for the acappella group Rhythm and Jews.

In 2020, Outsiders was nominated for Best Student Film at Bucharest ShortCut Cinefest and for Best Short Film at Woodstock Film Festival. It also won the Student Short Film award at Moscow Shorts.
