Columbia Artists Abound in 2024 Art Basel Miami Beach
Columbia students, alumni, and faculty are making their presence known at this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the world’s premiere art fairs. Upwards of twenty Columbia affiliates will have their work presented in connection with the fair’s wide array of platforms.
Originally founded in 1970 in Basel, Switzerland, Art Basel now hosts annual fairs in Basel, Hong Kong, Paris, and Miami Beach, and is celebrated both for its scale and pedigree. The Miami edition, held every December, features galleries from five continents with an emphasis on modern and contemporary art and emerging voices. The show is open to the public from December 6 to 8, 2024, at Miami Beach Convention Center.
The list of Columbia affiliates on display includes those exhibiting at the show’s main fair, and others featured at surrounding cultural institutions and satellite fairs in tandem with Miami Art Week.
In Art Basel’s main sector, Cristina Camacho ’15 is having her work featured via the Instituto de Visión, Allison Janae Hamilton ’17 via the Marianne Boesky Gallery, Kiyan Williams ’19 via Altman Siegel and Peres Projects, and Susan Chen ’20 via Night Gallery.
Visual Arts faculty are also heavily featured in Art Basel’s main sector, including Assistant Professor David Antonio Cruz via moniquemeloche, Assistant Professor Sable Elyse Smith via Regen Projects, and Adjunct Assistant Professor Esteban Cabeza de Baca via Parker Gallery and Garth Greenan Gallery.
“My experience showing at Art Basel Miami has consistently been euphoric,” said Cabeza de Baca. “It’s inspiring to see so much good work in one place and catch up with friends in this setting.”
Art Basel is also bringing Times Square to Miami Beach. Kambui Olujimi '13 is having his Times Square: Midnight Moment featured in rotation with thirty other Midnight Moments, free to the public at Soundscape Park from 7 to 11pm, December 4 to 6. The series, a Times Square fixture since 2012, sees video installations from acclaimed artists take over 90-plus digital displays from 11:57 am to midnight, 364 days a year.
Also during Miami’s Art Week, Judy Chung ’18 and Laurena Fineus ’24 are having their work featured at satellite fair Untitled Art, installed right on the sands of Miami Beach from December 4 to 8. Also presenting at Untitled Art is Columbia’s own not-for-profit printshop, the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies, setting up shop in booth C73.
Elsewhere among the festivities, Kelsey Shwetz ’22 is being featured by NADA Miami (the New Art Dealers Alliance) at Ice Palace Studios from December 3 to 7, Valeria Guillen ’24 is having her work shown at Miami’s Platabanda gallery, and Rachel Feinstein (CC ’93) is having her exhibition The Miami Years featured at Miami Beach’s Bass Museum of Art through August 17, 2025.
Adding to the wave of Columbia artists being featured via Art Basel and Miami Art Week are Victoria Roth ’14, Priscilla Aleman ’19, and Kristian Kragelund ’24, and current students Wenhui Quan and Zhen Yang.
