A new body of work by Visual Arts alumna Patrice Renee Washington '14 is available for viewing at Marinaro Gallery, New York.

Washington’s second exhibition with Marinaro, Blessed and Highly Favored, takes its cues from science fiction writers Octavia E. Butler and N. K. Jemisin to explore the transient self and the physical landscape it exits within. Through sculptures and paintings, Washington considers the questions: how do we decipher a world that we barely know, and what do we make of the artifacts that are left behind?

Monolithic sculptures, rendered in the artist’s signature ceramic, continue Washington’s examination of Black hair in relation to vulnerability, protection, and survival. Her tiled, delftware-inspired paintings rework the traditional and historic narrative of the medium by illustrating scenes of domesticity that centralize the experience of Black characters. Quotidian activities––cooking, taking out the trash, birdwatching––are depicted, laden with the symbols of a deeper, nuanced history.

Patrice Renee Washington is a visual artist living and working in Newburg, NY. She earned her BFA from Metropolitan State University, Denver, CO and her MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University. She has shown in solo and group exhibitions across the United States, including exhibitions at Marinaro (2019), Underdonk Gallery (2018), and a 2018 solo museum exhibition at The Museum of Contemporary Art Denver in Denver, Colorado. Earlier this month, her work was featured at Miriam Gallery, Brooklyn.

Blessed and Highly Favored runs at Marinaro Gallery until December 11, 2021.
