Austrian German in Literature and Translation | The Austrian Cultural Forum New York is hosting an event focused on Austrian German in literature and translation on the occasion of German Language Day at the United Nations. This event will feature a reading by Austrian writer Daniela Emminger and her translator, Alta L. Price, as well as opening remarks from Melina Tsiamos, ACFNY Deputy Director, and Eva-Maria Bellinger, Reviser (German Translation Section), Documentation Division DGACM, United Nations. In-person. Launching The Thorn of Your Name by Víctor Terán, translated by Shook | The Thorn Of Your Name is a carefully curated selection of poems, drawing from the whole of Terán’s poetic oeuvre. The poems are translated into English by his long-time translator and interlocutor, the poet Shook, working from Spanish bridge-translations made by the author. This online event will feature breathtaking readings from Terán and Shook in Zapotec Isthmus and English, followed by a Q&A chaired by Leo Boix. In Translation: Megan McDowell on The Obscene Bird of Night with Hari Kunzru | José Donoso’s The Obscene Bird of Night was one of the most brilliantly bizarre novels of “The Boom” of Latin American literature and one of the greatest novels of the century. In New Directions’s reissue—celebrating the centennial of its author’s birth—star translator Megan McDowell has revised and updated the classic translation, restoring nearly twenty pages of previously untranslated text mysteriously cut from the 1972 edition. Novelist Hari Kunzru (Red Pill) joins McDowell for a conversation and celebration of this newly complete edition of Donoso’s kaleidoscopic masterpiece. Hybrid (In-person and Virtual).
