Under the Same Sun: Publishing and Performing Latin American Translations in Nueva York | This half-day symposium brings together poets, critics, editors, and translators to explore the recent surge of independent publishers in New York focusing on Latin American literature. Discussions will address how Spanish-language publishers engage U.S. audiences, ways translators and publishers can prioritize indigenous languages and nonstandard Spanish and Portuguese, and how literature transitions from the page to classrooms and public performances. Ann Goldstein presents There's No Turning Back by Alba de Céspedes, in conversation with Joumana Khatib | Join renowned translator Ann Goldstein as she discusses There's No Turning Back, the powerful debut novel by Alba de Céspedes, banned by the Italian Fascist regime in 1938 for its revolutionary portrayal of women’s lives. This coming-of-age novel follows eight women at a Roman college as they navigate love, work, and emancipation. Ann Goldstein will be joined by Joumana Khatib, editor and writer at the New York Times Book Review, for an engaging discussion of de Céspedes’s life, work, and enduring relevance. In-person. 7 Stories Up at SNFL, Author Talks: Exploring Taiwan with Miss Chizuru: The Fictional Craft of Taiwan Travelogue | How can a Taiwanese novel incorporate historical materials from its decades under Japanese colonial rule? How does two women’s travelogue become a work of fiction? Viscera: Poetry Workshop + Q&A | Join us for genre-bending poetry workshop centered on Viscera: Eight Voices from Poland, including translator Małgorzata Myk, featured poet Natalia Malek, and editor Mark Tardi. While the program will be conducted in English, writing prompts will be offered in both English and Polish. Participants are encouraged to pursue questions of translation, language, and form. Following the workshop section, there will be a bilingual Q&A with Malek.
