Writing alumna, Tracy K. Smith '97poet laureate of the United States, will receive the Harvard Arts Medal at the opening event of the University’s annual Arts First festival on May 2, 2019. Smith won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for her collection Life on Mars; she is known for her lyrical, meditative poems. Her most recent collection, Wade in the Water (2018), is her most political.

Sam Charles Ross '13 has his debut collection of poetry coming out this February, titled CompanyCompany was selected by Carl Phillips as the winner of the Four Ways Books Levis Prize in Poetry.

PEN has announced its longlist for the 2019 PEN America Literary Awards.

The Writing Spotlight series highlights the work of alumni, faculty and current MFA students, asking them to share thoughts on their craft and practice through a question-and-answer interview.

Kao Kalia Yang '05 and Martin Pousson '99 were finalists of the PEN Center USA 2017 Literary Awards. 

Six School of the Arts alumni have once again received Guggenheim Fellowships this year: Gregory Pardlo ‘16 and Claudia Rankine '93 in Poetry; Brian Seibert '05 in Dance Studies; Antonio Méndez Esparza '08 in Film/Video; Rogelio Martinez '96 in Drama & Performance Art; and Leigh Ledare '08 in Photography.
