WRITING
SUMMER 2026

This course has been cancelled for the Summer 2026 term.

This is a creative-writing workshop on the craft of contemporary nonfiction. We will explore a notion of nonfiction as a heterogeneous and often hybrid genre, mapping some of its many modes: memoir, reportage, ethnography, cultural critique, manifesto, and more. Classroom emphasis will be placed on workshopping student writing, as we progress through a series of focused weekly writing assignments and readings, with space made for considering larger, longer-term student writing projects and goals. Readings may include selections by Dodie Bellamy, Roberto Bolaño, Wanda Coleman, Samuel R. Delany, Janet Flanner, Kevin Killian, Chris Kraus, David Rattray, David Wojnarowicz, and others.

Columbia students do not need to apply, but they do need to register. All visiting students will need to apply to the School of Professional Studies and register upon acceptance.
