Kate Loewald

Kate Loewald is the Founding Producer of The Play Company (PlayCo), the Off Broadway theatre she co-created in 1998. PlayCo commissions, develops and produces new plays from the U.S. and around the world, serving as a creative home for a uniquely global network of artists, and facilitating cultural exchange by connecting local and global artists in collaboration. PlayCo champions an artist-driven, process-centered producing model to generate dynamic and adventurous new work that celebrates the power of live theatre. With a commitment to affordable, inclusive access and collaborative community engagement, PlayCo advances an inclusive, innovative and internationally informed American theatre ecosystem.

Since 2001 PlayCo has produced 46 World, American and New York premieres of plays from the U.S., Europe, South, West and East Asia, Central and South America, and the Russian Federation. The mission, artists and productions have been recognized with awards, nominations and honorary grants from the Drama Desk, Drama League, Lucille Lortel, Obies, and American Theatre Wing organizations, as well as international festivals.

From 1990-99 Kate was head of the literary department at the Manhattan Theatre Club, overseeing programming and creative development. She created the MTC Playwriting Fellowships for emerging writers, and served as Director of MTC’s acclaimed Writers in Performance series in 1998 and '99, producing an innovative program of public literary events. Prior to MTC, Kate was producing associate to Margo Lion on George C. Wolfe’s Jelly’s Last Jam, Martha Clarke’s The Garden of Earthly Delights, and other plays on and off Broadway.

She is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Columbia University School of the Arts and has previously served on the faculties of the New School for Drama MFA program, the Fordham College theatre department, and New York University’s MFA Dramatic Writing Program. She was lead dramaturg at the O’Neill Playwrights Conference from 2000-2003. In addition to her work with The Play Company, she was the Guest Artistic Director for the Signature Theatre Company in the 2004/2005 season. She is a graduate of Yale College.

Adjunct Assistant Professor Kate Loewald , Founding Producer of The Play Company (PlayCo), and Theatre alumna Annie Wang ’20, PlayCo’s Communications and Marketing Manager, will assist in the presentation of the virtual performance This Is Who I Am via PlayCo’s collaboration with Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company.
