James Jennings Jr. joins the School of the Arts as Assistant Director of Student Affairs. Previously, he worked in the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement, where he planned and implemented faculty development initiatives in support of the University’s commitment to inclusive excellence.

Prior to that, James served as Special Projects Associate for the President’s Commission on the History of Race and Racism. In this role, he conducted archival research with the Columbia Slavery Project and supported the Symbols and Representations Working Group’s recommendations addressing the University’s historical ties to slavery. He earned his Master of Arts in African American Studies from Columbia University.

Outside of Columbia, James enjoys volunteering as a college essay editor at Brotherhood Sister Sol, reading and teaching 20th-century Black literature, and playing the ukulele.
