Visual Arts - Response to June 2020 VA Meeting
Dear Visual Arts Classes of 2020:
Thank you for sending your proposals in a clear document and for our recent meeting. We’ve received additional emails from many of you. At this time, we are able to confirm the below options for the members of the class of 2020 who did not graduate this past May. A communication to the class of 2021 will be sent to them as soon as we have more information.
Note that the dates below are based on the recently revised academic calendar for 2020- 2021.
Class of 2020
-
Thesis Exhibition:
-
The Thesis Exhibition for the Class of 2020 will take place in April and May of 2021 in the Wallach Gallery and the Lantern provided it is safe to proceed and the University approves the required access and staffing levels needed.
-
Students who were originally scheduled to participate in the 2020 MFA Thesis Show will be invited to participate either in person or virtually, regardless of graduation date.
-
-
Continuation of Registration, Tuition, and Fees:
-
Students who wish to delay graduation until either February 2021 or April 2021 will be able to register and maintain full-time status. SOA tuition and fees will be waived with this status.
-
Details regarding thesis advising, instructional support and access to instructional resources will follow. Additional information regarding registration will be forthcoming.
-
Students who wish to graduate in February will register for the Fall 2020 term only. Students who wish to graduate in April must register for both Fall 2020 and Spring 2021.
-
University-wide fees cannot be waived. Below are the 2019 – 2020 fees. The fees for 2020 – 2021 will be published soon.
-
§ University Facilities Fee: $513
-
§ Health Services Fee: $584
-
§ Medical Insurance: Fall - $1304; Spring - $2129
-
§ International Student Fee: $100
-
§ Late payment and late registration fees will still be assessed.
-
-
The University requirement to maintain health insurance cannot be waived. Students who wish to request a waiver from health insurance through the University must do so through Columbia Health. Waivers require proof of comparable insurance.
-
-
Loans, Service Positions, and Teaching Assistantships:
-
With full-time status, US citizens and permanent residents will be able to access federal and institutional loan funding.
-
Students will not be eligible for Teaching Assistantships or service positions in the School of the Arts. With full-time status, students will remain eligible to apply for casual positions at the University as usual.
-
-
Studios, Shops, and Low-Density Requirements:
-
Because of the University’s requirement to maintain low-density, students will not be allocated a studio on campus.
-
Students who decide to rent a studio off campus may apply to the Student Relief Fund for studio rent payment assistance or other eligible expenses.
-
Access to the shops will be granted on a case by case basis via a proposal process established by the program and in adherence with low-density requirements.
-
Students and recent graduates must have health insurance to access the wood, metal, or ceramic shops.
-
Information about the summer studio access and move-out will be forthcoming.
-
If you have questions regarding the above information, please contact Carrie Gundersdorf, who will bring them to our meeting on Thursday.
