'Those Who Whistle After Dark,' Feature by Alumni, Selected for Venice Biennale's College Cinema Program

Those Who Whistle After Dark, a feature project written by alumna Pinar Yorgancioglu '16 and produced by alumna Sarah Seulki Oh '15, was selected for the Venice Biennale's College Cinema program. The film, a dark comedy, follows Melih, a recent retiree, who, after his encounter with a skeptical angel, is faced with an existential awakening. Can he and his family survive this curse together?

Pınar Yorgancioglu is a New York & Istanbul based Turkish filmmaker. She is a co-founder of the Istanbul based Makarna Film. The short films she directed traveled internationally to film festivals including the Warsaw Film Festival, Palm Springs International Shortfest, Antalya Golden Orange, and Xining FIRST! Film Festival, and it won awards at festivals such as the Istanbul Film Festival. Her last short film Mrs. Nebile's Wormhole was the recipient of the production grant from the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and was shot on location in Germany. Her work as a freelance director includes web-series, music videos, and commercials. As a freelance editor, Yorgancioglu works on both narrative and non-narrative material in short and long form media. She is currently working on the development of her feature debut, which was selected for the Screenwriting Lab, organized by !F Istanbul and the world-renowned Sundance Institute.

Sarah Seulki Oh has produced narrative and documentary films in Amsterdam, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Turkey, U.K., and the U.S. Her films have showcased at Telluride Film Festival, Palm Springs International Shortfest, BFI London Film Festival and Raindance Film Festival, and have been supported by Sundance Film Institute, Tribeca Film Institute, Film London, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, ESPN and HBO. Sarah is the recipient of the 2014 HBO Producer Award, 2015 Entertainment Partners Best Producer Award and the TFI/ESPN Future Filmmaker Prize.

As part of the Venice Biennale's College Cinema program, 12 teams, composed of directors and producers, took part in a workshop, held in Venice from October 6th to 15th, 2018, from which three teams were selected for production. One, which is Italian and low-cost, will be funded in the amount of 150,000 Euro, and will be presented at the 76th Venice International Film Festival in 2019.
