Theatre Management and Producing alumna Barbara Whitman ’05 received the Tony Award for best play for Stephen Karam’s The Humans. It was her third Tony in as many years.
Columbia faculty and alumni were typically abundant among this year’s Tony nominees. Adjunct faculty member Barry Grove received a nomination for best play for producing The Father, for which Frank Langella took home the award for best actor in a play. Diane Paulus ’97 directedWaitress, which received four nominations, including for best musical, and Michael Passaro, the head of the Stage Management Concentration, served as production stage manager ofBright Star, which was also among the best-musical nominees. Adjunct faculty member Linda Marvel is the production stage manager for the current revival of Noises Off, which was nominated for best revival of a play and four other awards.
This was Whitman’s third Tony award in three years; she won the prize last year for best musical for Fun Home, and took home the award the previous year for best musical revival for her production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
