Hi All,

We have changed the Virtual Thesis collaboration policy so that a Virtual Thesis for a director or producer can be the “in program” Thesis for their producer or director, if the timing should work out that way.

Please see below for the full text of the policy change, which has also been included on the Virtual Thesis page, and let me know if you have any questions for your upcoming collaborations.

For the student who declares a production their Virtual Thesis:

The program cannot offer any support for principal photography, and is not responsible for any production that may result from the production plans submitted for Virtual Thesis Requirements.

Students may not be enrolled at the time of principal photography for a Virtual Thesis that counts towards their credits to graduate.

If another eligible student declares the project as their Thesis:

The production would need to be declared the student’s Thesis prior to principal photography.
The production would be subject to all in-program production policies.
The production would receive all benefits for in-program Thesis productions.
These in-program policies and benefits would replace all Virtual Thesis policies and benefits for the film, for example regarding disbursement of funding.

For example, if the Virtual Thesis is declared early, and production grant was disbursed at 75% according to Virtual Thesis rules, the Thesis declaration would mean the final 25% is disbursed as Finishing Funds on the Finishing Funds timeline.

The production would remain the first student’s Virtual Thesis.
