Introduction

The Theatre Program is entering uncharted waters with its 2020-21 production season. It is our plan to offer students as many opportunities as possible to actualize the education obtained in the classroom with full productions. What that looks like during a worldwide pandemic however, will be different from what we have ever seen. In a normal season, our Program produces the following in our three theatre spaces: 32 full productions, nine festivals (with the number of plays ranging from six-10), and four showcases and special presentations.

It is not possible to produce 41 theatrical events the same way with the presence of COVID-19. As such, this document details the options students have in order to see their work actualized, and the criteria imposed on each option. It outlines the parameters beginning with the start of the Fall B subterm, October 26, 2020. It provides detailed guidance for our students, staff, faculty, guest artists, and audience regarding rehearsals and performances in the upcoming year. As of its writing, the protocols outlined below reflect the most updated industry standards and have been deemed actionable by Columbia University.

Protocols contained herein are informed by, and must comply with, health and safety policies set by New York State, New York City, and Columbia University. As such they are subject to revision to ensure adherence to these institutions. We strive to safely serve our community while working within the mandated guidelines. In addition, these protocols do not overwrite any previously established safety protocols regarding non-COVID-19 dangers. If there are questions, it is the responsibility of the production to bring them to the Theatre Program staff before an issue arises. Lack of understanding will not be justification for non-compliance.
