Directing alumnus Marc Atkinson Borrull ’16 will direct the Irish premiere of Nick Payne’s Constellations at Dublin’s historic Gate Theatre.

In Payne’s award-winning play, Marianne is a quantum physicist. Roland is a beekeeper. They meet. They hit it off. Or maybe they don’t. They go home together. Or maybe they never speak again. Every decision you have and haven’t made exists in a parallel universe of infinite possibilities. Epic yet intimate, Payne’s funny and heart-breaking play asks which of our choices make for a life well lived.

Constellations premiered at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2012, and was revived at the West End’s Vaudeville Theatre in 2021. In 2022, the production was nominated for Olivier Awards in the Best Revival, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress categories.

The Guardian said Constellations “asks big questions about existence, purpose, and free will but also feels weightless and fun.” Borrull’s production will open at the Gate Theatre May 11 and run through June 2, 2022.

Marc Atkinson Borrull is a Brooklyn and Dublin-based director, originally from Ireland and Catalonia. Recent work includes the critically-acclaimed Beginning by David Eldridge (Gate Theatre), Little Gem by Elaine Murphy (Irish Repertory, Off-Broadway NYC/Outer Critics’ Circle Award), Hamlet (Gate Theatre & St Ann’s Warehouse, NYC - Associate Director), Outlying Islands by David Greig (Connelly Theater, NYC & Samuel Beckett Theatre, Dublin), among others. Marc was recently awarded the Irish Arts Council’s Theatre Bursary Award. He was also the first winner of the Jennifer Johnston Directing Bursary and, as a Shubert Presidential Scholar, received his MFA from Columbia University.
