A debut novel from alumna Kayla Maiuri ’16 is available for preorder from Riverhead Books.

In Mother in the Dark, an urgent call from Anna’s sisters about their mother begins a story about sisterhood, the complications of class, and the chains of inheritance between mothers and daughters. Maiuri’s novel delivers an unvarnished portrayal of a young woman consumed by her past and a family teetering on the edge of a knife.

Early praise for Mother in the Dark has been glowing. Former Adjunct Associate Professor Elissa Schappell, author of Blueprints for Building Better Girls, says, “There is much to admire in this beautifully written, unsentimental, deeply knowing novel. Maiuri is wise beyond her years, and fearless in her exploration of the ways that mothers and daughters are uniquely equipped to hurt each other.”

Mother in the Dark will be published in August this year.

Kayla Maiuri holds an MFA in fiction writing from Columbia University. Born in the Greater Boston area, she now lives in Brooklyn.
