Alumna Felicia King ’18 joined the writers of Shakespeare Now, an anthology of adaptations of Shakespeare’s work for television.

King is well-known for her complicated portrayal of Asian characters in her theatre work. An article in The Guardian last year described her as “totally invested in the power of Asian representation,” whose works have been produced by the Royal Court Theatre (London), Studio Theatre (Washington D.C.), Sydney Theatre Company (Sydney), and others.

Joining the writers of Shakespeare Now marks another milestone in King’s career. When Screen Australia, a Federal Government agency charged with supporting Australian screen content, announced funding for forty-two projects, Shakespeare Now headlined as one of its top projects. What distinguishes this project is the show’s all-female creative leadership.

According to Screen Australia, “This project is executive produced by ABC’s Sally Riley...It will be developed with the support of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.”

King has experience working with the American Shakespeare Center; she is one of five playwrights in their Shakespeare’s New Contemporaries program, receiving a world premiere production of her play, a $25,000 prize and travel and housing for the rehearsal and development process for her play, Keene. In 2019, the ASC hosted a reading of her Othello-inspired play.

King is a playwright, screenwriter and multidisciplinary artist of Thai-Australian descent. As a writer, King is interested in linguistic hybrids, digital cultures and issues of globalization. As a multidisciplinary artist, King has worked with a wide range of companies, including Punchdrunk, PlayCo, 3LD Arts & Technology Center, Roundabout Theater, Manhattan Theatre Club, 59E59, Ars Nova, the Obie Awards, The Builders Association, Ensemble Studio Theater, NYTW, American Shakespeare Company and Red Bull Theater. She is a member of Ensemble Studio Theater's Youngblood Group and Roundabout Theater's Space Jam Program.
